At the time Blind Illusion released “The Sane Asylum”, they had been active in some form for about 10 years, quite an oddity for a band to release their debut album 10 years into their career. But in the case of “The Sane Asylum” it may be to its advantage. Being that Blind Illusion was a Bay Area band it is easy to understand the overwhelming thrash sound, but some of these songs date back to 1979, which creates quite a contrast to the songs written in 1988. Despite the bands thrash base, there is also a very prevalent prog rock element. But “The Sane Asylum” never falls into the cliché trappings of Thrash Metal, maybe due to the fact that they sometimes sound much more comfortable playing the more experimental material. The album manages to possess a great sound, even if the production is not the best (even if it is produced by a Metal celebrity...). The remaster gives it a huge extra punch we might say. Of course, looking back on this album, there’s always the looming presence of Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde, who are, of course, also active in Alternative Rock group Primus. Though at that point of their respected careers each already had a very solid track record, with Claypool being told he couldn’t join Metallica because he was “too good”, and LaLonde was known as the guitarist of the Death Metal pioneers Possessed. Each song is very much important to the whole album, and while there are standouts (“Death Noise”, “Metamorphosis of a Monster”), but each songs works with each other to create a greater whole. There are no weak songs, on this album. Each song has its own distinct qualities that make each individually great! Overall, Blind Illusions “The Sane Asylum” is a study of a puzzle inside a riddle. It’s one of the most interesting listens you’ll ever encounter if you are into Thrash Metal. Find it, buy it. And enjoy this masterpiece. The screeching guitar solos and the abrupt rhythm changes keep the song fresh, but the band’s incorporation of technical Thrash elements crossed with extremely catchy riffing and drum arrangements proves to be the strong attributes of this album. There are numerous instances where the band finds its virtue in slowing down, letting a power chord ring out, and then letting the drums restart and propel the song once again. When the band decides to let their guard down and get cagey or manic with the rhythm, it’s done so with precision and doesn’t come at the expense of the song structure. When they get technical, the notes still vibrate with emotion, and the song doesn’t just become a vacuum for skills to be shown off. This message is most evident in every song, which all feature catchy guitar licks and great guitar riffs. What Blind Illusion does best on this new masterpiece is deliver cleverly-written and fun songs with catchy riffs. At the heart of Thrash, that’s really all you can ask for. The whole can clearly be compared to Nordland I \u0026amp; II from Bathory, but By Honour is by no means a simple copycat of those Viking Metal classics. Doom Metal is omnipresent in this release. The riffs are much slower, more viscous, than on most other Viking Metal albums and that makes the music of Ereb Altor unique. Continuing on through the album, the songwriting sets up a slow constant march, as if you’re trudging on through your hidden pain and sadness, pushed throughout the songs by the great drum and string work. The haunting yet driving elements to this album are truly what makes it so outstanding. Fans and followers of epic\/viking metal as well as extreme doom metal will sure find a lot to be pleased about since all of these elements (and many more) are well shown, mixed and integrated into the sound of the seven songs in it. Then you cannot deny the fact that independently from your likes, ‘Gastrike’ flows on its own, resulting in no boredom, no inconsistency, and so no pain for the ears nor brain. Every song has its own reason to exist and to be listened to. Sometimes more epic, sometimes gloomier, sometimes closer to black metal and other times more on doom metal side. With a vocal performance from Ragnar (Daniel Bryntse) which becomes increasingly Quorthon-like during the album’s 48 minutes Ereb Altor makes no bones about who their main influence is. Passionate lead and backing vocals, gentle yet strikingly profound synth accompaniment and monotonous drums (in a good way) all go into the making of the album’s best track “Myrding”, showcasing how content the band are to play music straight from the heart in strong defiance of the need to be the heaviest, fastest, slowest or most technical outfit out there. Given the true doom feel, naturally derived from Isole some of the potential Viking\/pagan metal crowd may be turned off, shocked at the absence of blastbeats, riffing speed or screaming. The riffs found in here will satisfy the listeners with its frenzy of melodic tremolo picked riffs that is intertwined with some eerie folk instrumentation. The elements in the guitar department, thrown in with a few folk instruments such as a saz and a darbuka, reveals how the band had successfully stripped metal down to its core and added a personal touch of their own special flair. them and it provides that extra punch and low-end heaviness to the overall outcome of Arallu’s music. It basically lies steadily beneath the guitars as it backs them up with some thick lines that give a more deep feel to the strings and dispenses an ominous atmosphere to the tracks. The drum section also catches the audience’s attention with a variety of destructive pummeling double bass blasting to some Middle Eastern tribal drumming that helps a lot in terms of keeping the atmosphere intact. The record is filled with high-pitched piercing shrieks and screams which create a dark and raw soundscape.
