Some may look sideways at this music, but true originality will often make you stretch your mind to grasp it. For specific tracks, “The Thesis’s Seasons”, “A Sphere in a Sphere (To Inifinity)”, and “Curtains” are the tracks that stand out the most. However, each song has it’s own uniqueness. You won’t find that every song sounds the same as many bands of this background. Each song has several catchy phrases and melody lines that will stick in your head. It’s definitely not a “true” album, but if progress helps to advance the genre out of static isolation, then you will definitely want to check this album out. The album features a mixture of traditional Viking\/Black Metal vocals with Hedlund’s very excellent natural voice. He’s arguably one of the best actual metal vocalists today. This album is a journey, and once hooked, you’ll find you don’t want to put it down. “The Focusing Blur” is more of an experience than an album. It may not appeal to you at first if you don’t give the music your full attention. It took a few listens before I caught everything, but that’s what makes an album great. To be specific, that means that Vintersorg is supposed to combine the catchy and folky parts of their first records with the progressivity of the later ones, but did the record achieve that? The balancing act between progressivity and the touch with nature seems to be quite difficult, as they have to catch the calamity of nature and combine that with quick-tempered progressivity. The result of this balancing-act seems to be really good, as the progressive passages could resemble brash phases of nature (such as storms). To be more exact, the compositions are more catchy than those of “Cosmic Genesis” without losing much raffinesse. The progressive phases are generating a multilayered record, which draw a line from “Jordpuls” (or “Till Fjälls”) to “Cosmic Genesis”. Another element that has increased again are the clean vocals, although Andreas Hedlund still manages to switch between those and harsh growls from one second to another. In addition they are using synthesizer sounds repeatedly, as well as sounds from flutes and other folky instruments, to resemble the touch with the nature. The orchestration and clean vocals are therefore creating a good atmosphere. “Jordpuls” is a great Vintersorg record, as fancy melodies and arrangements are again widely available. The musical direction came back to their first records, although they seem unable to detach themselve from the progressivity they once discovered. What makes “Orkan” stand out is its consistency. While “Solens Rötter” and “Jordpuls” are great albums, each one had a glaringly excellent high-light that made the rest of the album seem a bit weaker by comparison. “Orkan” embodies folk metal as it should be, in our opinion. Vintersorg has a true knack for forging catchy vocal lines - even in his progressive era, there are vocal hooks galore, and “Orkan” contains no shortage of them. “Orkan” rains down one of the catchiest choruses in Vintersorg’s history with competitively catchy verses. The folk melodies are also catchy and embody the persona of forests and oceans, as they should - not just in the title track, but the entire album. While I believe the folk metal instrumentation has really been kicked up on “Orkan” when com-pared to some of his previous albums. The vocals are so excellent, it’s official: Andreas Hedlund can seriously sing. Furthermore the solos are always superb. Songs like “Istid” and “Polarnatten” have nothing less but solos of the highest quality; there’s a folky aura to them that beckon the energies of the hurricane in themselves. It is also worth noting that though this album is predominately black-influenced folk metal, the progressiveness of Vintersorg’s mid-era lunges forth occasionally. Even a lot of Metalheads themselves cannot bring themselves to develop a taste for it, although diehard fans of the genre swear it is one of the most atmospheric and emotive styles of music in existence to date. With Vintersorg’s “Cosmic Genesis” it appears as if there is a perfect album for those who are not too much into Black\/Pagan Metal (or other extreme forms) but are interested to look into it. Strong melodies and intelligent instrumentation mixed with some more primal, heavy sounding riffs make for a very well-rounded Metal album that a much wider variety of listeners should find appreciation for. One of the biggest points of contention people seem to have with Black Metal are the high-pitched screams which dominate and help define the genre. While these are indeed present in “Cosmic Genesis”, the main form of vocal delivery rests on the deep and strong clean singing of Andreas Hedlund, at times verging on being operatic in nature. Strong melodies and some rocking guitar riffs are the order of the day for this classic Vintersorg album. A special track worth mentioning here is a great cover of the Uriah Heep track “Rainbow Demon”, which is performed in great Vintersorg style (and has a strong medieval- sounding intro). The album is full of great Black\/Folk Metal tracks, although the highlights would undeniably include the opener (‘Astral \u0026amp; Arcane,’) the title track, and the powerful ballad ‘The Enigmatic Spirit,’ which should convince anyone to check out this album after hearing it. But sometimes an album comes along that changes how we look at Metal.  We are not sure if that was Andreas “Vintersorg” Hedlund‘s intention when he wrote his debut full length, “Till Fjälls”, but that is exactly what this album did.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis intention was to create a sound that was Black Metal based but also focusing more on clean vocals and adding more traditional Swedish folk elements to the that base. He inadvertently patented a new sound and sub-genre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe album opens with, “Rundans,” which is basically an intro, being part acoustic and part electric. Keyboards take the place of what sounds like wind instruments.  “For kung och fosterland,” follows as the first proper song, opening with speed and fury there are tremolo riffs and grim vocals but they lead to a much more melodic approach with the clean vocals taking over.  Vintersorg sings here in a low baritone which became his trademark.  But it is the way he used those melodies intertwined with the heavier more Black Metal oriented sounds was new and nothing like it existed before.\u003cbr\u003eBut what the real magic here is the entire package.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSongs about that show how ancient paganism was so rooted in the actual forces of nature; while done so in his own language over top this epic Metal music that was all new.\u003cbr\u003eFrom the cold of Norrland this album manages to take the cold and grim and add some warmth and emotion. This masterpiece was just the first in a string of absolutely brilliant albums from this incredible talented artist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter 27 years this album still resonated with me the same as it did when I first heard it. Even a lot of Metalheads themselves\u003cbr\u003ecannot bring themselves to develop a taste for it, although diehard fans of the genre swear it is one of the most atmospheric and emotive styles of music in\u003cbr\u003eexistence to date.\u003cbr\u003eWith Vintersorg’s “Cosmic Genesis” it appears as if there is a perfect album for those who are not too much into Black\/Pagan Metal (or other extreme forms)\u003cbr\u003ebut are interested to look into it. Strong melodies and intelligent instrumentation mixed with some more primal, heavy sounding riffs make for a very well rounded Metal album that a much wider variety of listeners should find appreciation for.\u003cbr\u003eOne of the biggest points of contention people seem to have with Black Metal are the high-pitched screams which dominate and help define the genre. While\u003cbr\u003ethese are indeed present in “Cosmic Genesis”, the main form of vocal delivery rests on the deep and strong clean singing of Andreas Hedlund, at times\u003cbr\u003everging on being operatic in nature. Strong melodies and some rocking guitar riffs are the order of the day for this classic Vintersorg album. A special track\u003cbr\u003eworth mentioning here is a great cover of the Uriah Heep track “Rainbow Demon”, which is performed in great Vintersorg style (and has a strong medievalsounding intro). The album is full of great Black\/Folk Metal tracks, although the highlights would undeniably include the opener (‘Astral \u0026amp; Arcane,’) the title\u003cbr\u003etrack, and the powerful ballad ‘The Enigmatic Spirit,’ which should convince anyone to check out this album after hearing it. Compared to the previous albums, which were all very immediate and powerful, this one takes some good few spins to truly sink in. Rather than driving the songs with infectious folk-metal melodies and powerful percussion, “Visions from the Spiral Generator” builds an atmosphere around a more progressive base, a sparser approach to rhythm and a lot of dizzying, strange moments. The production is also a lot more open and less dense than previously, while Vintersorg’s vocals often occupy a much higher register than bellowing forth the lyrics in a deep baritone\/bass style, he sings much clearer. All this aside, it is a damn fine album. After the brief intro track, the second track “Vern Styr Symmetrin?” starts out with a traditional burst of aggressive metal riffing before settling into a clean chorus with some spacey noodling guitar lines. The weirdness really sets in with “A Metaphysical Drama”, with its bizarre chorus and loping, prog-rock riffing. The absolute highlight, though, is the 7-minute opus “The Explorer”, which has a truly massive chorus filled with excellent vocal hooks, a pulverizing verse riff and some highly odd keyboards. Of course, it’s followed by the proggiest track on the album, “A Star-Guarded Coronation”, which builds from a very 70’s-inspired clean strumming riff overlaid with crooned vocals, synth loops and a jazzy drum approach - a very strange sounding start, but then it builds to a crescendo with the chorus line that’ll stick in your head for days, which is followed immediately by an excellent solo before reverting to pure mellow rock sounds. Of course, there are more traditional tracks here too, particularly “Universams Dunkla Alfabet” and the brief, heavy closing track “Trance Locator”, which would’ve fit easily on “Odemarkens Son” or “Cosmic Genesis”. It seems when this album first came out, a lot of fans were highly disappointed, but rather than the heady ale of the older discs, this one is more of a fine wine - opened immediately, it just tastes weird, but age and time are necessary to fully reveal its flavors and nuances.
