PURTENANCE AVULSION - Demo 1 ´91 10" (Silver/White Splatter Vinyl)
The band play an interesting style of death metal which contains elements of doom and thrash metal. The songs are well written in that there will be a smooth transition from a doomy, crushing passage to a fast paced thrash riff. While there are a few bands out there who play a similar style, the way Purtenance Avulsion's music maintains a steady flow in each track despite the many tempo and riff changes makes them stand out from the other bands. The doomy sections have a nice atmosphere to them which is made by a simple, effective melody line repeated several times with the tortured vocals adding to the feel. The faster paced sections, however, provide a nice balance to the slower ones and simply thrash the hell out of everything. A song is composed so that there will be a tempo or riff change just before the other one will start to get old, and as a result captivating the listener and holding their attention for the duration of the individual track. There is not much in the way of solos on this demo, but this isn't a bad thing as they would be unnecessary in the context. Instead of just throwing them in for the hell of it, Purtenance Avulsion will put one in at the correct place so that the flow of the music isn't disrupted, and it is kept short but sweet. In other words, there is no wankery on here, and everything sounds in it's place.
