The debut album by Voivod perfectly reflects where the inspirations of the Canadian band reached, how they took their first steps and that even in 1984 the band was able to come out as both aggressive and quite inventive. On "War And Pain" there is not such hits as on the debuts of Metallica and Slayer, the filthy production sometimes covers up the more interesting details (although the sound itself is surprisingly legible anyway), and sometimes there is a lack of greater differentiation from the continuous punk rhythms forward, however, already here the group presented itself intriguingly and boldly pushed the border of wild and feisty thrash metal. Well, the quartet did not feel fully satisfied, which is why two years later they maintained a relatively similar approach of composing.
